August in France is holiday season, witness to a mass exodus of traffic to warmer destinations. The wise and thrifty motorist follows the Bison Fute routes that criss-cross the country, thereby avoiding the inevitable traffic jams and toll routes.
Popular destinations take on the usual tourist intensity, leaving those less salubrious places like ghost towns. This series is a microcosm of the event, taking in the Lyon-Arles tract.
